Del Power X - 1986

Del Power X is a 40 minute mecha parody OVA from 1986. At the time, the mecha genre was going through one of it's most successful periods since the industry began. Shows like Gundam Z and Spt Layzner were dominating the tv ratings. So you think there would be a decent market for an anime like this, yet like so many other parodies of it's time this one faded into obscurity. Only Gainax's Gunbuster bucked the trend but then it ditched most of the comedy and parody references after the first episode.

Del Power X is a really fun show with alot of original ideas. For instance, characters make over the top entrances, with the screen freezing, music playing and title cards flashing on the screen. It's all very frivilous and this sort of outlandish style is best captured by the arrival of a character called Nick (you'll see what I mean). There are so many great examples of the fun, sillyness captured in this show. You'll see characters fill up their mecha suits with gas, use wrestling moves for combat and excessively long power up sequences. There are so more jokes in this OVA, some obvious, others subtle. I don't want to spoil all the fun so I'll let the show itself pleasantly suprise you. With so many jokes squeezed into such a short show, I come to wonder how the creators did it. There's defintly more bang for your buck here than you''d find in a TV series.

The character designs are gorgeous, giving homeage to a style that was more popular in 1984, making the show look slightly older than it actually is. The animation, particularly the backgrounds, are detailed and well drawn. The show has a really, bright colourful look to it as well. The music is consistantly good consisting of upbeat electronic instrumentals to accompany the mood and action. Both the opening and ending's have really excellent vocal tracks, even if the lyrics don't make a lot of sense, but then when has that ever been an issue before?

Overall Del Power X is up there with the best of the parodies. It's been interesting to see the show gather a small cult following on some of the streaming sites in the last year. I'm hoping it's love and appreciation will continue to increase, the more people that see it. Hopefully you'll be one of them.

Hey so I was looking for info on this anime and I came across this:

http://chauthanh.info/animeDownload/anime/Del_Power_X_OVA.html

"In this prequel to the "X" TV series, a beautiful, young, bedridden dreamgazer named Kakyou remembers the life and death of a remarkable young woman whom he met in dreams. He also recounts his dreams of a tragic future in which the fate of the Earth will be decided."

Can anyone explain that? looool
