Hi-Speed Jecy - 1989 - Episodes 1-3

Hi-Speed Jecy is a 12 part OVA series from 1989. Although it's quite well known in old anime circles, it's never been fansubbed, even in the VHS days. It's probaly most famous for being character designed by the famous Haruhiko Mikimoto. He was one of the most revered designers of the period, some of his most famous works include Macross, Macross DYRl, Gunbuster and the design of Eve through the Megazone 23 triology.

ACR is proud to announce it's intentions to sub and release the whole series for the first time ever. We are using high quality laserdiscs for our raws, while mustering the best and most accurate fansub translations we can do. We hope to produce something quite special. All episodes will be torrented but in the meantime use our direct links.

Good News! Episode 1-3 are subtitled by us to deliver perfect translations that you would only usually find by professional companies. Episodes 4 and onwards are being released by another group.

I seem to vaguely remember this from when I lived in Japan, but it apparently didn't impact me like other titles ("Ranma 1/2" and "Dirty Pair" to name a couple).

Great that you have dedicated to the old series like this. Especially I love the 80s hand-drawn anime style. Never have heard about this series but I will definetely be following it. Thank you for the first episode and using Megaupload!

"Site updates every week from now on!" was a little short promise though (till next week).

It would be interesting to the see results if you used x264 and encoded the raw digitized video (not an MPEG-2 stream). Laserdisc don't have the typical DVD encoding issues inherent to MPEG-2 like blocking and banding. Since H.264 is much more powerful and efficient than MPEG-2, you could preserve much more of the original analog quality. Most H.264 videos today are actually transcoded from MPEG-2 inherenting all its lossage and artifacts. SD content encoded with H.264 isn't even an issue for low-end systems, so its rather unfortunate to stick to an outdated codec.

trivia: other than the title songs, the Jecy music soundtrack was all recycled music from L-Gaim, which was also recycled for the Outlanders OAV and again for the Moldiver OAV series.

I am not aware of any other anime music that got reused as much as this soundtrack did. Must've been cheap to license.

I'm in a state of shock!!! I watched this back in 1994 raw and was blown away because no one had fan subbed this show. As digital-subbing became more and more common I kept trying to find a subbed copy....ACR you guys rock. I mean this you guys just totally rock! The anime fan community owes you a big debt of gratitude for subbing Hi-Speed Jecy!!

@Anonymous: I do believe they just used the RAWs that were already available as the transfer looks very much the same.

It would be very awesome if you could do it in MKV format and with sof-subs (optional) not hardsubs. Nonetheless awesome job mate.
Keep up the good work!

i just found this site, and wanted to say thanks for doing this.
A few of these shows I know, others I don't.

Just glad to finally see more folks interested in these pre-90s animes. I really dig this stuff, and it reminds me of the days when all i could get were terrible VHS bootlegs for $20+ -- like my copy of Akira that was missing the last 4 minutes ): but we all treasured what little we could find and afford. Times change, and so has anime itself.

so i hope you aren't dead after i just found you
too sad if true...

To supplement what DJ-posted, PPP's work is being tracked here: http://www.animesuki.com/series.php/1857.html I would like to add ACR's to the tracker as soon as torrents are up for them.

Since DJ posted, episodes 5 and 6 have also been done:
http://www.nyaa.eu/?page=download&tid=221819
http://www.nyaa.eu/?page=download&tid=229628

Episode 7 is out now. http://www.nyaa.eu/?page=torrentinfo&tid=236824

You can view all #4-7 here: http://www.nyaa.eu/?page=search&cats=1_37&filter=0&term=jecy

Eventually I think it would be good to create a batch of ACR and PPP's work, perhaps we should wait until PPP finishes what they intend to do though?

farmerjonbmx said...

I will fund the subbing of the remaining episodes.

can anyone help seed the raw batch torrent of 1-12 for a bit please? I'm a little late in discovering this but would like to watch it if possible.

http://www.nyaa.eu/?page=torrentinfo&tid=190063

Thanks in advance if you choose to help :)

Ty said...

Creating a batch appears critical at this point because Megaupload went down earler in 2012 so there's no means of circulating the series. I had luckily gotten all 7 episodes before then.

Farmer Jon, I know ARR takes commissions and does older series. I can't exactly speak on the level of quality they present as it tends to vary a lot though.

Were someone to get 8-12 done, a full batch would be great.
