Gaga Communications - 1988 Trailer

In 1987 a Japanese theatrical and TV marketing company called Gaga Communications decided to try and break the US market by licensing and approaching a number of companies in the US which could be interested in aquiring the cutting edge animated shows from Japan. They put together a 37 minute reel of trailers with English subtitles for the dialogue and American voice narration for a brief synopsis of each OVA's plot.

Their motivation in 1987 was to branch out and tap into a potentially large gap in the overseas market by being the first company to truly release Japanese shows in their original form with English subtitles. If OVA's were big sellers in Japan then their belief was that with the right support and marketing, companies would be able to sublicence from Gaga to generate a decent profitable business outlet to accomodate the small but growing number of fans in the US.

In order to make a lot of titles seem more import friendly to the American market, Gaga decided to rename alot of the title original names. Here is a list of the anime featured in the trailers including the renamed titles in brackets. All anime are listed in the order they appear first:

Crystal Triangle
Project A-ko - (SuperNova)
They Were Eleven - (Star Odyssey)
Yotoden - (Blade of the Ninja)
Nayuta - (Aura)
Roots Search - (Alien X)
Metal Skin Panic Madox 01 - (City of Steel)
Dream Dimensional Hunter Fandora
Bubblegum Crisis - (FutureScape)
Scoopers
Humanoid - (Metallica)
MD Geist - (Thunder Warrior)
Maps 1987 - (Star Quest)
Circuit Angel - (Thunder Road)

Anyway enough of a history lession, it's time to watch this lost gem dug up from the 80's. Even the illustrious wikipedia and internet groups fail to bring none if any information regarding this rarity. Anyway at 400mb this file is more than worth putting the effort in to downloading:

I just watched this and found it a total riot. It's funny because in the end they did pick some successful shows to sell, but I guess the time was not right. Anyway do you have any information on Scoopers? That OVA looks great.

It is indeed a shame Gaga Communications failed otherwise we'd all have subtitled copies of Scoopers by now. They were several years too early and it seems they just didn't have the right contacts to succeed.

Unfortunately i have no other info on Scoopers as of now but i do plan to import a vhs copy of it from Japan and upload it onto my bog in the future so stay tuned.

I watched the whole thing, what a blast form the past. Strangely, this video has convinced me to get Yotoden. It looks pretty!

Could've been worse. Celebrity Home Entertainment could've stepped in, dubbed those and cut them to shreds before releasing them as EP-recorded cassettes on the shelves at Toys R Us.

Sorry to get all nuts there, but it's sad thinking of how classics like Macross: DYRL were handled through that company and their "Just for Kids" moniker.

Lord knows I got somewhat interested by the plot in this one. If not that, the concept alone made reminded me of this little-known Ruby-Spears toon, but of course Japan can do far better in the action dept...

Do you guys think this would be popular enough for a torrent to succeed? Would love to see it on animesuki or nyaa.

Chris, it did give us some manly lines from Roy like "You can fight, WHEN YOUR DRUNK" and how to help Hikaru score with the ladies. I found a copy of that tape about a year ago, still sealed. Its in my collection, I wont deny it.
